What do I Wear for my Family Photo Session?

Listen, I’ve been there. Finding the right clothes for an entire family is challenging. You have to find clothing that’s flattering, will photograph well, and look good when all next to each other. It’s TOUGH. But guess what?? I’ve learned to LOVE finding the perfect clothing for my clients and truly enjoy the process! (Finding them for my own family is a whole other challenge, but that’s a story for another day.)

Truly, one of the most challenging parts of getting family photos done is figuring out what to wear. While it can take some time and thought, your session’s styling can truly amplify your images and take your gallery to the next level. It’s a careful combination of color, neutrals, patterns, and textures. Your clothing matters.

I am 100% not one who normally cares about my clothes or what I look like when I run to Target. Absolutely not. But this hour of your year is different. These are memories you will hold on to forever, and pass on to your children’s children. So you should look and feel your very best. It will help you feel confident, beautiful, and I promise you, it will make a world of difference in the end result.

Here are some general tips when deciding what to wear for your session:

  • Coordinate, but don’t match. Avoid having multiple family members wearing the same color or pattern. Dress as the individuals you are! You can have multiple colors involved that coordinate well together, and don’t forget to add in neutrals - they help tie everything together! When looking at different tones, you can use a combination of light, mid, and dark tones for variety and interest.

  • Mix solids with patters and textures. Variety adds interest! Find a good combination between solids, patters, and textures and you’ve created some wardrobe magic!

  • Allow for movement and comfort! This is a reason I recommend long dresses for women - the movement they add is beautiful, and it keeps everything covered when playing, kneeling, or sitting.

  • Think about earth tones. Instead of using bold, primary colors, find the earth-toned alternative. For example, instead of yellow, look for mustard; instead of red, go for burgundy or maroon; rather than green, look for olive or emerald. Definitely no neon colors - bright colors reflect off the skin and can affect skin tones.

  • Avoid writing or logos on your clothing - it can be distracting and/or difficult to read.

  • Utilize accessories! Suspenders, jewelry, tall socks… they all photograph so well!

I know it sounds like a lot… but don’t feel overwhelmed! I am here to help!
